Adventurers

Welcome to Adventurers 2025 - 2026

We are a mixed-age class of Year 1 and Year 2 children.

Our class teacher is Miss Greveson.

Miss Nash also supports us in our learning each day.

Spring 1 2026

English

In English we will be reading the story of 'Beegu' by Alexis Deacon.

This is a heart-warming tale of an alien - Beegu – who crash lands on earth and finds refuge and friendship with the children in a school playground. The story lends itself to discussions about the importance of welcoming, respecting and including others. Alexis Deacon is a significant, award-winning author and illustrator.

The children will be informed that a friendly alien is on the loose somewhere in the local vicinity and needs our help. Children describe the alien before writing letters of advice. They will then begin to read the story and connect with the main character by discussing and writing about Beegu’s feelings as the key events unfold. When the happy ending is revealed, children write in role as Beegu’s parents considering the questions that they might ask her when they are reunited. Children then go on to make sock puppets of their own alien and to write short reports on these before writing their own narrative based on the story shape of Beegu.

Maths

For Maths we follow White Rose Education. This half-term, the Year 1 and Year 2 children will be learning about addition and subtraction within 100. Tiny will always be on hand to help the class with their maths learning!

Science

Animals Including Humans – All about animals!

Children will learn learn how to identify and name a variety of common animals including fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. They will learn how to identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. And finally, they will learn how to describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals including pets).

History

How was school different in the past?

Children will compare schools now and in the past. It highlights key vocabulary and helps develop a chronological understanding of ‘within living memory’ and ‘beyond living memory’.

RE

We will be exploring the question: What can we learn from sacred books?

PSHE

Jigsaw piece – Dreams and Goals

Aims to help children think about their hopes and dreams, their goals for success, what personal strengths are, and how to overcome challenges, via team work skills and tasks. There is also a focus on enterprise and fundraising. Children learn about experiencing and managing feelings of pride, ambition, disappointment, success; and they get to share their aspirations, the dreams and goals of others in different cultures/countries, and their dreams for the world.

Children will explore that everyone is different.

Music

'I wanna play in a band'

I Wanna Play In A Band by Joanna Mangona – a Rock song for children.

Art

Painting and mixed media: Life in colour

This unit focuses on teaching primary and secondary colours, colour mixing, and creating textures using different tools. It also covers collage techniques, encouraging pupils to experiment with materials and evaluate their artistic choices and aims to develop children's understanding of colour, texture, and composition in art. Use this unit hub to inform your medium-term plan and to navigate to related resources

Computing

Creating media - digital writing

Children will learn the various aspects of using a computer to create and change text. Learners will familiarise themselves with typing on a keyboard and begin using tools to change the look of their writing, and then they will consider the differences between using a computer and writing on paper to create text.

PE

Target Games

Our PE days are on a Wednesday and Friday.

Please remember to come in your PE kit on these days and to remove all jewellery. Small stud earrings should also be removed or covered with tape for PE. Thank you.

Home learning

For phonics, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme. The children take home a reading book each week that closely links with their phonics stage. We encourage them to read this as much as possible over the week before returning it to school. You can also take a look at the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Resources for Parents page: For parents | Letters and Sounds (littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk)

In addition to this, children take home a book which they choose from our school library to read for pleasure with their parents/carers.

For maths, we encourage the children to log on to Numbots each night and practise just a few questions.

You can also use the White Rose One-Minute Maths which is a great resource when time is limited.
