Adventurers

Welcome to Adventurers 2025 - 2026

We are a mixed-age class of Year 1 and Year 2 children.

Our class teacher is Miss Greveson.

Miss Nash also supports us in our learning each day.

Autumn 1 2025

English

In English we will be reading the story of 'Cave Baby by Julia Donaldson and ‘The Journey Home’ by Frann Preston-Gannon.

In our learning about ‘Cave Baby’ Children will explore the text, looking at the various animals and joining in as the text is read, e.g. ‘Sabre-Toothed Tiger’. By the end of the first week, children will know the text and be able to retell it verbally or by using puppets and small world.

In our learning about ‘The Journey Home’ children will explore issues of conservation and start to explore whether we can escape the issues that endangered animals face on a day-to-day basis. Children will create fact files on endangered animals as well as writing short persuasive pieces on why we need to save a particular endangered animal. Children will be able to identify how a sentence is formed by its grammatical structure as a question, a command, a statement or an exclamation. Children will be encouraged to edit work, being aware of tense and word choice. Word classes (nouns/verbs/adjectives) will be referred to throughout.

Maths

For Maths we follow White Rose Education. This half-term, the Year 1 and Year 2 children will be learning about place value and addition and subtraction. Tiny will always be on hand to help the class with their maths learning!

PSHE

Jigsaw piece – Being me in my World

Children will explore:

  • How I feel special and safe in my class
  • Ways that I belong to my class
  • How to make my class a safe place for everybody to learn
  • How it feels to be proud of an achievement
  • The range of feelings when I face certain consequences
  • My choices in following the Learning Charter

Music

Hands, Feet, Heart

Hands, Feet, Heart is a song by Joanna Mangona. A song that celebrates South African Music. The material presents an integrated approach to music where games, the dimensions of music (pulse, rhythm, pitch etc), singing and playing instruments are all linked. As well as learning to sing, play, improvise and compose with this song, children will listen and appraise different styles of South African music.

D&T

Structures (Baby Bears Chair)

Children will learn about structures, stability, functions, man-made and natural materials as well as testing to see if something works as well as it should.

Computing

Computer Systems and Networks (Information Technology around us)

Children will develop their understanding of what information technology (IT) is and will begin to identify examples. They will discuss where they have seen IT in school and beyond, in settings such as shops, hospitals, and libraries. Children will then investigate how IT improves our world, and they will learn about the importance of using IT responsibly.

PE (Our PE days are on a Wednesday and Friday).

Fundamentals

Following the Get Set 4 PE framework, this half-term the children will explore the fundamental skills of balancing, jumping, running, changing direction, hopping and skipping.

Home learning

For phonics, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds programme. The children take home a reading book each week that closely links with their phonics stage. We encourage them to read this as much as possible over the week before returning it to school. You can also take a look at the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Resources for Parents page: For parents | Letters and Sounds (littlewandlelettersandsounds.org.uk)

In addition to this, children take home a book which they choose from our school library to read for pleasure with their parents/carers.

For maths, we encourage the children to log on to Numbots each night and practise just a few questions.

You can also use the White Rose One-Minute Maths which is a great resource when time is limited.
